The original 300SL: slanted 6 cylinder taken from the 300 sedan and fitted with mechanical fuel injection. A birdcage type intricate tubular lightweight chassis. The chassis made it necessary to have high doorsills to avoid flexing. And the high doorsills and low roof made it necessary to have the gullwing doors. A very german 'Form follows function', and not a fashion statement.
